ABSTRACT FOR THE CATALINA REPORT ON WOOD AND LAMINATE FLOORING
SUMMARY OF MAJOR FINDINGS
The U.S. wood and laminate flooring market benefited from the pandemic-recovery surge in housing demand. Sales also received a boost from non-movers’ strong spending on remodeling projects. Manufacturers and marketers were able to take advantage of these trends since wood flooring has the highest dependence on the builder market in the U.S. floor coverings industry, while laminate flooring has the highest reliance on the residential replacement market. Wood flooring sales also benefited from sharp price increases as manufacturers passed through rising material, labor, and transportation costs. At the same time, producers introduced more water- and wear-resistant flooring to satisfy consumer’s increased preference for hard surface flooring, and better compete with rigid core luxury vinyl tile. As a result, wood and laminate flooring is increasing their share of total U.S. floor coverings dollar sales during 2022. Supply chain issues could have held back some share increase. Meanwhile, sourcing is shifting to other Asian producers as Chinese manufacturers lose position in the U.S. market. However, Catalina forecasts a more challenging market environment in 2023 as interest rates increase sharply and housing demand declines. As a result, manufacturers and marketers should increase their reliance on the residential replacement and commercial markets
