ABSTRACT FOR THE CATALINA REPORT ON WOOD AND LAMINATE FLOORING

SUMMARY OF MAJOR FINDINGS

Wood flooring has been the only flooring industry sector to experience an increase on dollar and square foot sales since 2023. The sales gain was led by increased demand from high-income households. As a result, wood flooring could have reached its highest dollar share of total U.S. flooring sales in a decade. Engineered wood flooring suppliers benefited from this trend due to their ease of installation and maintenance compared to solid wood flooring. Manufacturers also improved wood flooring’s performance by introducing water-resistant products. Domestic manufacturers are taking share as tariff charges rise. At the same time, foreign-based suppliers in Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, and Malaysia gained share as Chinese suppliers lost ground. Meanwhile, laminate flooring has been able to hold onto 2.9% of total floor covering sales in dollars and square feet despite this sector’s heavy dependence on the weak residential replacement market. Laminate flooring suppliers have kept their lines price competitive and upgraded product lines with more realistic wood looks and made their flooring more water-resistant. In any case, Catalina forecasts these flooring sectors to move in opposite directions over the next five years-wood flooring is expected to gain additional share of the U.S. floor coverings market while laminate flooring could lose some position.

WOOD AND LAMINATE FLOORING MARKET TRENDS

Catalina Research uncovered these trends in our annual report on the U.S. wood and laminate flooring market. The report covers U.S. sales in dollars and square feet. Catalina has calculated wood and laminate flooring’s position in the U.S. floor coverings and hard surface flooring industries. Catalina also conducted a comparative analysis of wood and laminate flooring prices. Wood flooring market data is segmented for solid and engineered product lines. The report consists of 11 pages of summaries and 54 data tables.

SOURCE OF SUPPLY- WOOD AND LAMINATE FLOORING

Separate sections evaluate U.S. shipments and imports.  Import shipments are tracked by country of origin.  As part of our analysis, Catalina calculated U.S. sales by country of origin. There are also pricing trends by country of origin, as well as insurance, freight, and tariff costs of importers. A similar analysis is conducted for solid versus engineered wood flooring. In addition, Catalina reviewed the product strategies of the major competitors, including the introduction of water-resistant products.

END-USE MARKETS AND FACTORS AFFECTING DEMAND

Wood and laminate flooring sales are provided for residential and non-residential markets and for new construction and remodeling markets. End-use market trends are correlated with U.S. housing demand, new home construction, homeowner improvement construction spending, non-residential construction spending, mortgage interest rates, and other economic indicators to uncover the factors driving demand and provide insights into the direction of domestic sales in 2027 and beyond.

U.S. WOOD FLOORING EXPORTS

U.S. wood flooring exports are analyzed for solid and engineered products and by major country of destination.

COMPETITIVE ENVIRONMENT AND WOOD FLOORING PLANT PROFIT MARGINS

In addition, Catalina Research examined the cost structure and profitability of U.S. wood flooring plants.  Data trends are compiled for material, labor, and capital inputs. Catalina supplemented industry data with sales of leading suppliers. Catalina used this data to calculate leading supplier market shares. A similar market share analysis was conducted for the laminate flooring sector. Catalina reviewed company products, manufacturing and distribution, capital investments, and acquisitions to uncover competitive strategies.  Executives are urged to review the growth- and profit-oriented strategies of leading wood and laminate flooring manufacturers and compare their company’s own performance to the industry averages.
