ABSTRACT FOR THE CATALINA REPORT ON THE FLOOR COVERINGS INDUSTRY TRENDS AND END-USE MARKETS

SUMMARY OF MAJOR FINDINGS
The U.S. floor coverings industry experienced its third consecutive decline during 2025. Sales declined to $31.9 billion and 26.2 billion square feet. The dollar sales decline, however, moderated as manufacturers pushed through price increases to partially offset new tariff charges and rising input costs. This resulted in the first average industry price increase since 2021. Builder purchases are outpacing overall industry trends driven by sales of homes selling for $1.0 million or more as preferences shift to higher-end flooring installations. The commercial market continues to find selling opportunities in healthcare and educational markets; however, commercial sales slowed along with non-residential building construction spending. Consumer purchases remains the industry’s weakest due to the overhang of the sharp drop in existing home sales in previous years. The consumer market is currently impacted by a drop in sentiment caused by concerns over inflation and the job market. All flooring material sectors declined during 2025, except wood flooring. Wood flooring seems to be the only sector to experience and increase in dollars and square feet during 2025.

The report, however, points to several green shoots that could result in the start of a sales rebound in 2026. The decline in mortgage rates is the most important factor to stimulate demand. Mortgage rates have been trending downward since the second quarter of 2025. The decline has already resulted in some upward movement in existing home sales and an increase in the number of new homes sold. Any additional cuts by the Federal Reserve will add momentum to these trends and result in an upturn in residential sales next year.

FLOORING SECTOR SALES AND SOURCE OF SUPPLY
Catalina Research uncovered these findings in our in-depth report on U.S. floor coverings industry trends and an analysis of end-use markets. U.S. shipments, exports, imports, and price trends are evaluated for wall-to-wall carpet, carpet tile, and area rugs; solid and engineered wood flooring; ceramic and stone tile; LVT by product, other vinyl tile, vinyl sheet, other resilient flooring; and laminate flooring. Data is in dollars and square feet. Import sales are tracked by product by major country of origin. Our analysis uncovers the inroads made by manufacturers and marketers located in Vietnam, India and other foreign-based manufacturers. Tariff charges are also investigated.

PROFIT MARGINS AND THE COMPETITIVE ENVIRONMENT
In addition, Catalina Research investigated profit margins of U.S. floor coverings plants. As part of this analysis, Catalina Research compiled company sales and profit margins, and calculated company market shares. Market shares were also calculated for the soft and for each hard surface flooring sector.

END-USE MARKET ANALYSIS
Catalina investigates the industry’s end-use markets in three separate sections: Residential Replacement Sales, Builder and Manufactured Home Producer Purchases, and Commercial and Transportation Equipment Markets. Each section evaluates end-use market sales trends, purchases by flooring type, share of total flooring sales, and floor coverings share of inputs for each end-use market. For example, Catalina examines flooring material’s share of total builder spending and the average value per square foot of flooring purchased. Existing home sales and household income are analyzed to evaluate the drivers of residential replacement demand. A similar analysis was conducted for the builder and manufactured home markets. In this section, Catalina analyzed new home completions, total square footage built, housing starts and permits to uncover opportunities in this market. For commercial markets, Catalina tracked flooring purchases for new construction and remodeling projects. Construction spending by type of building was analyzed as part of this process.

U.S FLOOR COVERINGS EXPORT SHIPMENTS
A separate section analyses U.S. export shipments. Catalina calculated the importance of export shipments by flooring sector and by major country of destination.
