ABSTRACT FOR THE CATALINA REPORT ON CERAMIC AND STONE TILE

SUMMARY OF MAJOR FINDINGS

U.S. ceramic and stone tile sales could reach $5.6 billion and 3.9 billion square feet during 2021.  Sales could increase by 5.8% in dollars and 8.7% in square feet.  Ceramic tile is expected to outpace the growth trends of stone tile.  Sales growth is benefiting from a healthy builder market and a strong residential replacement market.  Digital printed designs also offer ceramic tile buyers stone, wood, and other looks, and large format tiles offer buyers a wider array of applications such as countertops.  These higher-end products are more likely to be manufactured in domestic plants since foreign-based competitors have made significant investments in U.S. production capacity.  Foreign-sourced products, however, continue to compete at the lower end of market as average import prices decline.  This has put pressure on overall ceramic tile prices.  Currently, domestic manufacturers are losing share to low-cost producers located in India, Malaysia, and Thailand, as well as producers located in Spain.  Ceramic and stone tile sales are projected to increase about 4.0% annually in dollars, and some 3.0% in square feet over the next five years.  Sales are projected to continue to benefit from a strong housing market and a recovery in commercial markets as the economy rebounds from the pandemic-induced recession.

CERAMIC AND STONE TILE MARKET TRENDS

Catalina Research uncovered these trends in our annual market review on the U.S. ceramic and stone tile industry.  The report covers U.S. sales in dollars and square feet.  Catalina has calculated ceramic and stone tile’s position in the U.S. floor coverings and hard surface flooring markets.  Catalina also conducted a comparative analysis of ceramic and stone tile prices.  The report consists of 34 pages of Executive Summaries and analysis, and 47 data tables.

SOURCE OF SUPPLY

A separate section evaluates U.S. shipments and imports.  Catalina also estimated the market for porcelain and ceramic tiles and floor and wall tiles.  Import shipments are tracked by country and Catalina calculated the share of U.S. tile sales by country of origin.  There is also an analysis of tile pricing by country of origin, as well as insurance, freight, and tariff costs faced by importers.  In addition, Catalina reviewed the product strategies of the major competitors including the introduction of digitally-designed stone and wood looks, and investments in new U.S. production capacity.

END-USE MARKETS AND FACTORS AFFECTING DEMAND

Ceramic and stone tile sales are provided for residential and nonresidential markets and for new construction and remodeling markets.  End-use market trends are correlated with U.S. housing demand, new home characteristics, kitchen and bathroom remodeling projects, nonresidential construction spending, mortgage interest rates, and other economic indicators to uncover the factors driving demand and provide insights into the direction of domestic sales in 2021 and beyond.

DISTRIBUTION CHANNELS AND CONSUMER DEMOGRAPHICS

Ceramic and stone tile distribution is analyzed by type of outlet.  The specialty floor covering store, home center, and tile showroom channels are evaluated to indicate the shifts in retail sales channels.  The market shares of the leading retailers are evaluated.  In addition, the tile contractor business is analyzed by type of building and by type of work.  Contractor costs and profitability are evaluated as well.

WORLDS MARKETS AND U.S. EXPORTS

Catalina analyzed world output, and the tile market in major producing and consuming countries.  The manufacturing base and domestic demand were reviewed for the Chinese, Brazilian, Indian, Italian, Spanish, Vietnamese, and other markets.  Catalina also included ceramic tile production for 10 leading global manufacturers.  U.S. exports are analyzed by major country of destination.

COMPETITIVE ENVIRONMENT AND PLANT PROFIT MARGINS

In addition, Catalina Research examined the cost structure and profitability of U.S. ceramic tile plants.  Data trends are compiled for material and labor inputs.  Catalina supplemented industry data with sales of 8 leading U.S.- and foreign-based manufactures.  Catalina used this data to calculate leading supplier market shares.  Catalina reviewed company products, manufacturing and distribution, capital investments, and acquisitions to uncover competitive strategies.  Executives are urged to review the growth- and profit-oriented strategies of leading worldwide ceramic tile manufactures and compare their company’s own performance to the industry averages.
