ABSTRACT FOR THE CATALINA REPORT ON CARPET AND RUG MARKET
SUMMARY OF MAJOR FINDINGS
Soft surface flooring products lost considerable share to hard surface flooring over the psst two decades. The decline in share primarily reflects the drop in wall-to-wall carpet installations. As a result, there has been consolidation in U.S. residential carpet manufacturing capacity. Area rugs have taken up some of the slack in soft surface demand since consumers purchase rugs to place over their newly installed hard surface flooring. Consumers also turn to low-cost rugs to quickly refresh the look of a room. Area rugs, however, are primarily sourced from Asian and other low-cost foreign-based producers. These trends caused U.S. carpet mills to increase their emphasis on commercial grade carpet and carpet tiles. Currently, carpet tile sales are benefiting from the sharp gain in non-residential building construction spending. Competitors have expanded their carpet tile lines to take advantage of this growth.
CARPET AND RUG MARKET TRENDS
Catalina Research uncovered these trends in our annual report on the U.S. carpet and rug market. The report covers U.S. sales in dollars and square feet. Catalina has calculated carpet and rug’s position in the U.S. floor coverings industry. Catalina also conducted a comparative analysis of wall-to-wall carpet, carpet tile, and area rug prices. In addition, the report analyzes trends for auto and aircraft carpeting and tufted artificial grass. The report consists of 30 pages of summaries and 42 data tables.
SOURCE OF SUPPLY
Separate sections evaluate U.S. carpet and area rug shipments and imports. Import shipments are tracked by country of origin and calculated as a share of U.S. sales. There is also pricing trends by country of origin, as well as insurance, freight, and tariff costs of importers. A similar analysis is conducted for woven, tufted, felt, and knotted products. In addition, Catalina reviewed the product strategies of the major competitors including the introduction of new products.
END-USE MARKETS AND FACTORS AFFECTING DEMAND
Carpet and rug sales are provided for residential and non-residential markets and for new construction and remodeling markets. End-use market trends are correlated with U.S. housing demand, new home construction, homeowner improvement construction spending, non-residential construction spending, mortgage interest rates, and other economic indicators to uncover the factors driving demand and provide insights into the direction of domestic sales in 2024 and beyond. Residential sales are further segmented into wall-to-wall carpet and area rugs. Commercial sales are segmented into wall-to-wall carpet and carpet tile.
U.S. CARPET AND RUG EXPORT SHIPMENTS
U.S. carpet and rug exports are provided by major country of destination and share of domestic mill shipments.
COMPETITIVE ENVIRONMENT AND CARPET MILL PROFIT MARGINS
In addition, Catalina Research examined the cost structure and profitability of U.S. carpet mills. Data trends are compiled for material, labor, and capital inputs. Catalina supplemented industry data with sales of leading suppliers. Catalina used this data to calculate leading supplier market shares.
