ABSTRACT FOR THE CATALINA REPORT ON CARPET AND RUG MARKET
SUMMARY OF MAJOR FINDINGS
Soft surface flooring is estimated to have lost share of total floor coverings sales in 2025 after gaining share the previous two years. Soft surface flooring usually gains share during periods of weak overall floor coverings sales. Soft surface lost additional share in 2025 despite continuous weak floor covering demand due to a sharp drop in residential wall-to-wall carpet sales. Manufacturers partially offset the drop by increasing reliance on carpet tile and area rugs. Carpet tile increased their importance to soft surface manufacturers due to significant inroads in commercial markets. As a result, leading suppliers expanded their product lines. At the same time, area rugs doubled their share of the total residential soft surface market as consumers placed area rugs over their newly installed hard surface flooring or purchased area rugs to inexpensively refresh the look of a room. Sales have been stimulated by the availability of relatively low cost area rugs from manufacturers located in Turkey, China, Mexico, Egypt, and Vietnam. Meanwhile, weak wall-to-wall carpet sales put downward pressure on carpet mill profitability.
